Jets take a flier on Edwards

Browns coach Eric Mangini dumped Braylon Edwards off on his former team Wednesday, trading to the Jets a wide receiver whose off-field troubles have matched his immense talent.

"It's the right thing for us and for Braylon," Mangini said.

The Browns got wide receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik and two draft choices in return for Edwards.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said Edwards is expected to start immediately.

That includes the team's game Monday night in Miami.

"It's just another piece that we wanted to add," Tannenbaum said. "We're excited to get Braylon. We think he's going to help us."

The former Pro Bowler comes to the Jets with his share of off-field issues. The NFL is investigating whether Edwards violated the league's conduct policy following accusations he assaulted a man outside a nightclub on Monday.

Crabtree signs: Wide receiver Michael Crabtree agreed to a six-year contract with the 49ers after several months of difficult negotiations. The former Texas Tech star was the only draft pick who hadn't signed.

Who's soft?: Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman wasn't pleased to read a comment from general manager A.J. Smith that the team's play at times this year has been "soft and bewildered."

Said Merriman: "That's an opinion of a person, and it's not needed."

Extra points: Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez said he was fined $5,000 for his low block on Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma. ... Seahawks nine-time Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones, trying to return from two knee surgeries, will not return until at least November. ... Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb plans to start against the Bucs, his first action since breaking his rib in the season opener.
