7.7 M Santa Cruz Islands Earthquake

Another large earthquake in the Vanatu region… This 7.7 earthquake occurred near the Santa Cruz Islands on Thursday, October 08, 2009 at 09:18:26 AM local time. It was located on the boundary between the Australia and Pacific plates. A tsunami watch was issued but cancelled.

A series of large earthquakes struck between the Santa Cruz Islands and Vanuatu Islands in the Pacific Ocean today, triggering a tsunami warning for several nations in the region. The first quake hit at 9:03 AM local time, and had a magnitude of 7.8.
There were several large aftershocks, as well. The original Santa Cruz / Vanuatu Islands earthquake was followed at 9:18 by a magnitude 7.7 aftershock. There was a 7.3 earthquake at 10:13 local time, as well.
The Pacific tsunami warning center issued a tsunami warning for 11 countries and territories, including the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Kiribati. A tsunami watch was in effect as far away as Australia and New Zealand. There were no immediate reports of injury or damage from officials in Vanuatu.
The first quake struck at a depth of 35 kilometers, about 260 kilometers south of Lata on the Santa Cruz Islands and 295 kilometers north-northwest of Vanuatu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
This is just another in what seems to be a series of large earthquakes in the Pacific in the last few weeks. An example, and the most devastating quake so far was the Sumatran quake. The Indonesian government said 609 people were confirmed dead, but the final death toll from the 7.6 magnitude quake that stuck western Sumatra was expected to rise to more than a thousand.
